Some of the
tracks and places I've been in Australia
- Most places in the Kalgoorlie
goldfields area.
It's one of my favourite areas to visit for a short 1 - 2
week jaunt.
It's my original birthplace and where
my father worked as a miner for many years.
Draw a box from Laverton down to the
transline, west to Southern Cross,
NNW to Paynes Find and back to Laverton and we've
probably been there.
- Kimberlies (3 times):
- Mitchell Plateau and Mitchell
Falls and down to
the coast at Port Warrender (what port?). We even
visited Myres Island where the ashes of one of
the first modern day surveyors of the Mitchell
Plateau was placed. We also went up the Lawley
river until we hit fresh water at a little water
fall. The return boat trip was interesting - the
tide had gone out....mud flats, crocodiles and
stone fish are not my idea of fun when pulling a
dingy.
- Gibb
River road and the
Wyndham-Karunjie back road to Wyndham just after
the Pentecost River crossing - it's a nice
alternative (there are croc's in the river!). I
have a great story about the first time we camped
on the shore of the Pentecost ('87) - we are
pretty sure that we saw the light at night of a
serial murderer (German guy) that was trying to
dump the bodies of his latest victims on the
other side. This guy had been stalking tourists
and shooting them. It was one of those rare
nights that we had a dark & quiet camp, no
fire going and we were just sitting quietly
watching the river etc. We didn't know what was
going on at the time, we just saw a torch light
and so fired up our 24V BIG spotlight and pointed
it over his side (maybe 1/4 mile away) thinking
we had some camping buddies over there. The light
went out and we heard nothing the rest of the
night. A week or so later we found out that a
couple of bodies had been dumped on the river
edge apparently in a panic... Glad we were on the
other side of the river and a couple of miles in
and off the main track.
- Bungle Bungles via the back
road from Turkey Creek. On my last visit via the
official road in, it appears that our friends
from the National Parks have 'removed' evidence
of this back road ;-(
- Ayres rock (on a trip up to the
Kimberlies, to NT and then to Alice) and back to Perth
via Warburton. We had 3 aborigines on the roof rack (on
top of the food box etc) doing 80km/hr for a couple of
hours - they ran out of fuel and wanted a lift to Cosmo
Newberry. This was mid-winter - never seen blue
aborigines before ;-)
- Canning stock route from Wiluna up to
the turnoff to Newman (where my mate worked) and out via
Rudall River National Park using a neat track that goes
past Hanging Rock and through Meeting Gorge.
- Pilbara (many times):
- Newman area, Weeli Wolli Creek, Burranbar
pool (on the Savory Creek - memorable on the
Canning Stock route at Lake Disappointment where
it starts).
- Carawine gorge upper and lower
(via Shay Gap and out to Nullagine).
- Rudall River National Park and
then out by the back track via Hanging Rock and
Meeting gorge that comes out north of Balfour
downs.
- Wittenoom
gorge area.
- Top of Mt Meharry - tallest
mountain in W.A. - what a joke... good view
though.
- Kennedy Ranges - interesting area (an
escarpment that has sand dunes on top) and very few
people if any.
- Mt Augustus - ho hum - an excuse for
the local homestead to charge money for camping etc...
- Up and down the coast highway - too
many people.
